'Quiet Fury' By Amber Brunsden Art.
This small studio work is an original oil painting on cotton canvas, measuring 10" × 12".
I wanted to create a painting where the sky feels almost impossibly large, overwhelming the small patch of land beneath it. The yellow field occupies only a small proportion of the canvas, deliberately dwarfed by the vast black storm gathering above. Despite the painting’s small size, I wanted the storm to feel enormous, as though it stretches far beyond the edges of the canvas.
The dark clouds twist and turn into one another, building and gathering as the storm moves across the landscape. There is something almost alive about them, layers of black and deep, shifting tones fold into each other, creating a sense of movement and unease.
In the top left corner, a small area of light remains. It is subtle, but important. For a moment, there is still somewhere for the light to exist, although the storm is slowly beginning to consume it.
Quiet fury is about the anger we can feel when we are hurting, the frustration of feeling stuck, and the overwhelming emotions that can exist beneath a seemingly quiet exterior. Sometimes there is no dramatic outburst. Sometimes we simply sit with it. We carry it quietly, allowing the storm to move through us while we wait for the light to return.
Although this is one of my smaller works, I wanted it to carry the presence of something much larger. A storm that feels too big for the landscape, too big for the canvas, and impossible to ignore.
