Original Landscape Oil Painting on canvas 'The Dark Veil‘, 20” x 24”. Gloss Varnished.
The Dark Veil
In this painting I wanted to capture the heavy, foreboding presence of a storm as it begins to roll across the land. The Dark Veil is dominated by a deep, brooding sky where dark blue tones dissolve into near black, forming a vast storm cloud that pushes in from the right-hand side of the canvas. I painted the cloud as if it is physically rolling over the landscape, swallowing the distance and slowly covering the land beneath it.
The title comes from a strong feeling about something being hidden. As the storm advances, it feels almost as though a veil is being pulled over the world, softening what lies beyond it and obscuring the distant hills. Just as a veil can dim the light and alter what we see, the storm cloud drapes itself over the horizon, hiding the landscape beneath its shadow.
On the left-hand side of the painting, a break in the clouds allows a hopeful light to emerge. This subtle light catches the edges of the storm clouds, softly illuminating their contours and creating a quiet contrast against the otherwise oppressive darkness of the sky.
The land below mirrors the mood of the sky above. The land itself is dark and heavy, and you can barely see the distant hills that are almost completely swallowed by the approaching storm. Through the centre of the painting, a dark brown-black path cuts through the landscape, drawing the eye inward and leading quietly into the gathering shadow.
With The Dark Veil, I wanted to explore the quiet power of nature and the atmosphere that comes just before a storm fully takes hold - that moment when the sky lowers, the light fades, and the landscape feels as though it is being gently covered by the dark veil of the clouds.
