Storm Hymn is a small studio oil painting, I wanted to explore my love of music and the power of a storm. I called the painting Storm Hymn because when I look at it, it feels almost audible, as though the storm itself is singing across the land. The dark cloud carries the weight and rhythm of thunder, while the light at the horizon answers it softly, like the final note in a hymn.
A heavy storm cloud moves in from the right side of the canvas, dominating the open sky, while a sharp band of white light breaks through low on the horizon to the left. Beneath it, a golden-brown field stretches out in stillness, divided by a deliberate straight horizon line that grounds the composition in simplicity and calm.
In this piece, once again I have painted my love for the powerful composition of storm sky and land beneath it. Although it may only be on a small canvas, I love painting this way because I think you can feel the vastness of the storm.
Despite its modest scale, Storm Hymn carries a strong presence and is designed to create a striking impact on any wall.
