The Last Season is a painting that asks you to stop for a moment. This piece certainly doesn’t whisper it speaks with confidence. The deep burnt sienna, fiery oranges and rich reds rolling through the storm cloud above a glowing golden wheat field create a piece that commands attention and brings an undeniable energy to any space.
As with all of my work, the perfectly straight horizon line is a signature that runs throughout my paintings. For me, it represents balance, stillness and certainty, even when everything above it feels uncertain. From the left-hand side of the horizon, light breaks through, reminding us that hope has a habit of finding its way into even the darkest skies.
When I first began painting The Last Season many months ago, it was inspired by thoughts that had been sitting with me for a long time. I found myself reflecting on the increasing power of Mother Nature, the growing unpredictability of our seasons, and what the future of our landscapes could look like. I imagined fields struggling to produce what they once did and storms becoming more frequent and more intense. Rather than creating a scene of fear, I wanted to paint a moment that invites reflection and a reminder of both nature's incredible beauty and its immense power.
What feels particularly surreal is that I started this painting long before the devastating wildfires that have recently affected parts of Europe. Watching those events unfold has made this piece feel unexpectedly relevant. While that was never my intention, it has reinforced something I have always believed and that is art often has a way of reflecting emotions and possibilities before we fully recognize them ourselves.
My paintings have never been about decorating a wall with something simply beautiful. They are about creating emotion, starting conversations and encouraging people to pause and think. Sometimes that means confronting subjects that feel a little uncomfortable. Perhaps The Last Season is an uncomfortable truth staring back at us from the canvas but it is also a reminder of resilience, of light breaking through, and of our connection to the natural world.
I believe the most powerful art isn't always the easiest to look at. It's the art that stays with you long after you've walked away.
